How long does BBQ sauce last?
Short answer: keep an unopened bottle in the pantry until its best-by date. Once it is open, keep it in the fridge and use it within a few months.
Fridge or pantry?
Unopened bottles are fine in a cool, dark cupboard. Once opened, refrigerate. BBQ sauce is acidic, so a bottle left out during a cookout isn’t a problem, but the fridge keeps the flavor bright and keeps mold away.
How long it lasts
Check the best-by date printed on the bottle for unopened sauce. For an opened bottle, most sauce makers suggest using it within a few months if it stays refrigerated. Small-batch sauces without heavy preservatives are best on the quicker end of that.
Signs it has gone bad
- Mold on the sauce or around the cap
- A sour, fermented or yeasty smell
- Bubbling, a bulging cap or a big change in color or texture
When in doubt, throw it out.
Storage tips
- Pour what you need into a cup instead of dipping a used basting brush into the bottle.
- Wipe the cap threads before closing.
- Keep it on a fridge shelf rather than the door, where the temperature swings.
Can you freeze BBQ sauce?
Yes. Freeze leftovers in a small container or ice cube tray, thaw in the fridge and stir before using. Texture may loosen a little.
Going through it too slowly?
Use it up: toss it with crockpot meatballs, brush it on chicken thighs, or stir a spoonful into baked beans. Or grab a two-bottle set instead of a case.
